Mattress Disposal Options

Feb 2, 2024

Considering donating a mattress to Household Goods? Please review the following information to be sure we can accept it.

Mattresses are one of the most important, yet most personal items we provide, and we want our clients to be comfortable and confident choosing a used mattress.

Household Goods only provides our clients with mattresses that are in good condition with no visible stains or rips.

Our volunteers are responsible for inspecting each incoming mattress to ensure the mattress meets our standards. If they find any visible stain and/or rip, of any size, source or cause, the volunteers are not able to accept the mattress.

Mattress Disposal Options: We know how frustrating it is when we cannot accept a mattress, and we are aware that disposing of large items such as mattresses can be burdensome when the time comes to do so.

As a non-profit that provides services free of charge, we cannot take on the large disposal cost of unusable mattresses nor are we set up to dispose of mattresses for a fee.

Here are two options to consider:

  1. After the statewide mattress disposal ban went into place in 2022, over 230 cities, towns, and municipalities in Massachusetts have created options for mattress recycling. Search online for “mattress disposal in [Your City /Town]” to see the options in your town.
  2. Contact a private junk hauler or mattress recycler. Search online for “mattress recycling near  [Your City /Town]”

Many thanks for supporting Household Goods. Our volunteers who give their time to help people in need make a home appreciate your understanding.
