Student Volunteers

At Household Goods, we embrace student volunteering!

We have an ongoing need for student volunteers (ages 14 and over) to assist with various projects in our center in Acton.

Students can volunteer on Saturdays, during school breaks and over the summer. Shifts are typically 8:45am-12n or 12:45pm-4pm.

Volunteering at Household Goods is a great way for students to work together as a group, develop and practice leadership skills, be a part of a team, earn community service hours and more.

Immediate Openings

We have immediate openings at our Acton center for:

Individual Student Volunteers – working with clients (Portuguese or Spanish language skills a plus!), sorting and preparing items for distribution to clients and assisting with the furniture donation process.

Note: Individual Volunteers need to attend one New Volunteer Orientation, typically offered on the 1st Saturday of the month 10am-11:30am at the center in Acton OR the 3rd Tuesday of the month 7pm-8pm via Zoom.

Student Volunteering Groups – 2-10 students who can follow instructions and work independently.   Groups typically volunteer for a one-time event, or can choose to make volunteering a recurring event (once a week, once a month, etc.).

Student Community Service Weeks – Do you have extra time over an upcoming break or over the summer? We are now offering vacation week programs. Grab a friend or 2 and volunteer! It’s a great way to meet new people while helping out the community. See the schedule on this page for specific vacation dates.

  • February Student Community Service Week
  • April Student Community Service Week
  • Summer Student Community Service Weeks

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there an age requirement for volunteers?

Volunteers must be at least 14 to volunteer independently.

Q: Is there a dress code?

Our Center is busy and we deal with used furniture and household items that have been donated. Please dress in clothing that can get dusty. You will be coming into contact with some cleaning supplies, as well as doing light to moderate physical labor both inside and possibly outside. Dress in layers during the colder months and bring a rain jacket depending on the weather. Closed toe shoes are mandatory.

Q: Are there any other ways to help?

Yes! Students or groups can host a Goods Drive or organize a Kitchen Starter Set part. This is a great activity for students under 14.

Q: How do I move forward?

Please submit the form on this page and our Volunteer Coordinator will be in touch with you about the next step.
